Enbrel (etanercept) is a new type of injection medication used to treat chronic auto-immune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, which are caused by an over-active immune system. Enbrel belongs to a class of drugs known as TNF-blockers, which suppress a person’s immune system. Unfortunately, Enbrel has been linked to some severe, life-threatening side effects. Our team of Enbrel lawyers are currently investigating links between Enbrel and bone fractures, broken bones, and other bone injuries. Enbrel has also been linked to deadly side effects, including cancer, invasive fungal infections, tuberculosis, and more.

Enbrel (etanercept) is prescription injection medication used in the treatment of severe, chronic autoimmune disorders. These diseases are caused by an inappropriate immune response against substances or tissues that a normal in the body. People with autoimmune diseases have an immune system that mistakes part of the person’s body as an invasive pathogen, causing the immune system to attack its own cells. One way to treat these diseases is with medication that suppresses the body’s own immune system. Enbrel is one such type of medication.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Enbrel to treat five autoimmune diseases:
- Rheumatoid arthritis: Inflammation, swelling, pain in the joints and tissues around the joints
- Plaque psoriasis: A skin condition characterized by red, raised, irritated areas of skin covered by silver, flaky skin
- Psoriatic arthritis: A combination of skin and joint inflammation, usually occurring on the fingers
- Juvenile idiopathic arthritis: A type of chronic arthritic in children and young adults. Children may also suffer spiking fevers.
- Ankylosing spondylitis: An arthritic condition that affects the joints and tissue between the spinal bones, and also the spine and pelvis
Enbrel belongs to a class of drugs known as Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)blockers. TNF is normally produced by the body during an immune response, and it triggers white blood cells to move into an affected area and attack joint tissue. Enbrel is a genetically engineered medication designed to attach to TNF, causing the body to metabolize the combined substance and flush it out of the body.
Enbrel Side Effects
Enbrel is designed to lower a person’s immune response. Though this can treat chronic autoimmune conditions, it also lower’s a person’s immune defense against bacteria, fungus, viruses, and more. As you can imagine, some of the most serious side effects of Enbrel are related to infections. Because the risk of Tuberculosis (TB) is so high, the FDA recommends that doctors test all new patients before they start treating with Enbrel.
Enbrel may also be linked to some of the following side effects:
- Bone fractures
- Bone breaks
- Opportunistic fungal infections
- Bacterial sepsis
- Solid organ cancers
Enbrel and Bone Fractures
We are currently investigating the possible link between Enbrel and bone fractures, broken bones, and other bone injuries. If you have suffered a bone injury after taking Enbrel, we encourage you to give us a call for a free case consultation. You may be entitled to compensation for your bone injury.
Other types of musculoskeletal injuries include joint pain, back pain, and infective arthritis. There has been at least one person with arthritis who also became infected with Listeria monocytogenes, a deadly bacteria.
Symptoms of a broken bone include:
- Over the site of the break, the flesh will appear red, swollen, or bruised. It may have an unusual appearance, or bulge outward.
- The site of the break will be severely painful. It will become more painful when the bone moves.
- The part of the body beyond the fracture will be less functional, or may be numb.
Treatment for bone fracture depends on the severity and the type of fracture. If the bone has broken the skin, immediate first aid is necessary to stop bleeding and prevent infection. However, care must be taken to keep the bone in one place. Moving a broken bone can cause further damage. A person who has suffered a broken bone should not be moved unless they are in danger, especially if they have a broken spinal bone, skull fracture, hip fracture, or broken hip. Do not test a bone’s ability to move. Severe broken bones are a 911 emergency, especially if the bone is in the head, neck, back, hip, pelvis, or upper leg, if there is severe bleeding, or the bone projects through the skin.
Enbrel and Cancer
Since 2008, dozens of people have developed cancer after taking Enbrel, prompting the FDA to issue cancer safety warnings in June 2008, August 2009, and April 2011. The FDA is now conducting enhanced surveillance of the drug manufacturers. This means that the manufacturers must tell the FDA within 15 days of receiving adverse event reports, and they must submit yearly reports detailing adverse events.
The safety labeling on Enbrel already warns that the medication has been linked to lymphoma, leukemia (white blood cell cancer), skin cancer, and several other types of cancer. Enbrel has also been linked to several forms of cancer in children and young adults, especially a cancer of the white blood cells known as “Hepatosplenic T-Cell Lymphoma.” This is an aggressive, fast-growing type of cancer and is usually fatal.
